Ukraine Transfers Two North Korean POWs to South Korea

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that Ukraine has recently transferred two North Korean soldiers to South Korea. This move, confirmed by South Korean officials, could have significant implications for diplomatic relations in the region.

During his address at the United Nations General Assembly, Zelenskyy stated, "Recently, we sent two North Korean prisoners of war to the Republic of Korea." He elaborated on the challenges of capturing these soldiers alive, mentioning one attempted suicide upon capture.

The Ukrainian presidential office emphasized that the transfer was conducted through direct dialogue with South Korea, highlighting the sensitivity of the situation. They noted that these soldiers are considered citizens of the same Korean nation.

The two North Korean soldiers had been captured in January 2025 while deployed in support of Russia's military actions in Ukraine. They had expressed a desire to defect to South Korea, which was facilitated through communications with a defector group.

South Korea's foreign ministry has acknowledged ongoing discussions regarding the soldiers, emphasizing respect for their free will and adherence to international law.
