Lee Accuses Ukraine of Breaching Agreement on POW Transfer

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has expressed regret over Ukraine's recent disclosure of the transfer of two North Korean soldiers to South Korea, stating it constitutes a breach of a non-disclosure agreement. This incident highlights the growing diplomatic tensions between the two nations.

In a post on his social media, Lee emphasized that the transfer should have remained confidential to avoid potential diplomatic complications. He noted, "It was appropriate in every aspect not to disclose, considering many problems it may cause when disclosed."

The controversy arose after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy mentioned the transfer during his address to the United Nations General Assembly. Following this, the Ukrainian presidential office confirmed that the transfer was conducted through direct dialogue with South Korea.

Lee pointed out that this issue is sensitive and could significantly impact national security and diplomacy on the Korean Peninsula. He expressed disappointment over Ukraine's decision to disclose the transfer, which both countries had agreed to keep confidential.

The two North Korean soldiers were captured by Ukrainian forces in January 2025 while deployed to support Russia's military operations. Lee's remarks reflect the delicate nature of inter-Korean relations and the broader geopolitical dynamics at play in the region.
