South Korea Welcomes Record 15 Million Foreign Tourists by August

In a remarkable achievement for its tourism industry, South Korea welcomed a record 15.05 million foreign tourists in the first eight months of 2026. This figure represents a 21.6% increase compared to the same period last year, when 12.38 million tourists visited the country.

The surge in visitors is seen as a positive indicator for the South Korean economy, with foreign tourists spending approximately 14 trillion won (around $10.3 billion) on tourism-related expenses during this time. This spending reflects a 48.5% increase from the previous year, showcasing the growing appeal of South Korea as a travel destination.

August alone saw a monthly record of 2.25 million tourists, contributing to the overall growth. Notably, the proportion of visitors arriving via regional airports and ports reached 27.8%, indicating a diversification of tourism beyond the traditional hotspots in the greater Seoul area.

The influx of tourists has been particularly strong from Chinese-speaking countries, with arrivals from China increasing by 29% to 4.8 million and from Taiwan by 32.2% to 1.66 million. Additionally, Southeast Asian countries have also shown significant growth in tourist numbers, with notable increases from the Philippines, Vietnam, and Thailand.

This rebound in tourism is expected to have a lasting positive impact on South Korea's economy, providing a boost to various sectors reliant on foreign visitors.
