South Korea's overseas direct investment experienced a remarkable increase of 32.3% in the second quarter of 2026 compared to the same period last year. This surge highlights the growing interest of South Korean companies in expanding their presence in foreign markets.
According to data released by the Ministry of Finance and Economy, the total overseas direct investment reached approximately $20.52 billion from April to June 2026, up from $15.5 billion in the same quarter of 2025. This upward trend has been consistent since the third quarter of 2025, indicating a robust recovery and confidence in international business ventures.
The financial and insurance sectors were the primary drivers of this growth, with investments in these areas jumping by 33.4% to $10.48 billion. The ministry attributed this increase to the efforts of South Korean businesses to diversify their global portfolios and seek new opportunities for growth.
Investments in manufacturing also saw a modest increase of 3.2%, totaling $3.57 billion. Notably, the information and communication sector witnessed a dramatic rise, with investments more than tripling to $2.73 billion.
Geographically, the United States emerged as the top destination for South Korean investments, with a staggering 53.6% increase to $8.86 billion. Japan followed with investments rising to $2.46 billion, a significant jump from just $300 million a year earlier. Luxembourg also saw a 14.2% increase in investments from South Korea, totaling $1.59 billion.
