On September 15, 2026, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung and Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev met in Seoul to elevate their countries' bilateral relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership.
This agreement marks a significant step in diplomatic and trade relations, building on previous ties established in 1992 and a strategic partnership formed in 2009. The leaders discussed expanding cooperation beyond trade to include economic security, advanced industries, and cultural exchanges.
Thirteen intergovernmental agreements were signed, focusing on areas such as crude oil supply, geological exploration, and energy security. Kazakhstan, being Central Asia's largest oil producer, offers South Korea a chance to diversify its crude oil imports.
In the nuclear sector, two agreements were reached to promote peaceful nuclear energy use, including joint research and workforce development. This collaboration aims to strengthen the nuclear fuel supply chain and enhance energy security for both nations.
The two leaders also explored future growth areas like artificial intelligence and renewable energy. Tokayev invited Lee for a state visit to Kazakhstan next year, signaling a commitment to furthering their partnership.
