On September 21, 2026, three military officers from South Korea were injured in a suspected landmine explosion while conducting a search operation at the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) separating the two Koreas. The explosion occurred around 10:50 a.m. south of the Military Demarcation Line in the western sector of the DMZ.
Two of the injured officers sustained serious injuries, with one losing an ankle. Fortunately, none of the officers' injuries were life-threatening. An emergency helicopter was dispatched to transport the injured personnel to a hospital, coordinated with the United Nations Command.
Military officials are currently investigating the cause of the explosion, which is believed to be linked to a landmine. The Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) indicated that the explosion might have been caused by either a landmine planted by North Korean troops or one that was part of a South Korean clearance operation.
This incident underscores the ongoing security concerns in the region, especially given the recent tensions between North and South Korea. The last serious landmine explosion on the South Korean side of the DMZ occurred in August 2015, highlighting the persistent dangers faced by military personnel in this volatile area.
