LG Energy Solution has landed a deal to supply battery energy storage systems (BESS) for the Steel River Energy Center, a large-scale renewable power project being developed by Google and U.S. independent power producer Cypress Creek Energy (CCE). The companies announced the partnership on Tuesday local time.

The project pairs solar photovoltaic generation with LG-supplied batteries to create one of the biggest solar-plus-storage facilities in the world. Google described it as the largest such project in its global energy portfolio and said it would purchase the facility's entire output during the initial phase.

The center will begin with roughly 2 gigawatt-hours of battery capacity, with operations targeted for 2029 and a planned expansion to 2.9 GWh. It is designed to help meet the rapidly rising electricity demand created by the expansion of data centers and artificial intelligence workloads.

LG Energy Solution will provide its locally made lithium iron phosphate ESS solution, including the JF2 DC Link system. The win follows a recent collaboration with Michigan-based DTE Energy and cements the Korean firm's growing foothold in North America's energy storage market.

Industry watchers point to LG's localization push as decisive. As Washington tightens rules on Chinese supply chains, the company stands out as the only battery maker with a fully built-out North American production network. Google and CCE said key components, including batteries, solar panels and structural steel, will be sourced domestically.

LG Energy Solution runs four ESS battery plants across Michigan, Ohio, Tennessee and Canada, with an additional facility in Lansing, Michigan, set to start production later this year. The firm aims to top 60 GWh of global ESS output capacity by year-end, more than 50 GWh of it in North America.

Having secured roughly 140 GWh in cumulative ESS orders through last year, plus new contracts in 2026, LG Energy Solution is tightening its grip on a storage market being reshaped by Big Tech's surging appetite for power.
