Lee Thanks Turkmenistan for Helping Evacuate S. Koreans from Iran

In a recent summit at Cheong Wa Dae, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung thanked Turkmenistan's President Serdar Berdimuhamedow for their support in evacuating South Korean citizens from Iran. This evacuation occurred after the outbreak of hostilities between the U.S. and Iran earlier this year.

President Lee acknowledged the critical role Turkmenistan played in facilitating the safe passage of over 30 South Koreans through its territory. He emphasized that this act of kindness demonstrated the deep trust and friendship between the two nations.

The meeting took place on the eve of the inaugural South Korea-Central Asia Summit, with both leaders discussing the potential for further cooperation. Lee expressed hopes for substantive partnerships, particularly in leveraging Turkmenistan's natural resources and strategic location.

Berdimuhamedow reciprocated the gratitude, highlighting Turkmenistan's appreciation for South Korea's ongoing support on various international issues. He reaffirmed his country's commitment to resolving Korean Peninsula issues through peaceful dialogue.

The discussions also covered economic collaboration, including infrastructure projects and joint initiatives in sectors like water management and desertification control. Following the summit, 13 bilateral agreements were signed, marking a significant step in enhancing ties between the two countries.
