Lee Calls for Resumption of Trade Pact Negotiations with Mexico

During a business forum in Mexico City, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung emphasized the importance of resuming trade pact negotiations with Mexico. He highlighted that Mexico is South Korea's largest trading partner in Central and South America, with bilateral trade reaching $20.6 billion last year.

Lee pointed out that despite this significant trade relationship, the absence of a comprehensive trade agreement limits further economic collaboration. He noted that a trade agreement would provide a solid foundation for strengthening bilateral economic cooperation, especially amid global trade uncertainties.

The president referred to a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) as a means to enhance cooperation beyond mere market liberalization, encompassing investments and various economic sectors. He underscored the complementary nature of both economies, suggesting that the agreement would unlock broader opportunities for growth.

In addition to trade discussions, Lee and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum recently agreed on a comprehensive action plan to bolster cooperation in advanced industries, including AI and defense. Lee expressed the need to expand collaboration into future industries and energy sectors, aiming for mutual prosperity over the next sixty years.
