South Korea's business sentiment for the fourth quarter of 2023 has shown a notable improvement, according to a recent survey conducted by the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI). The Business Survey Index (BSI) for 2,413 manufacturing companies nationwide reached 86 for the October-December period, marking a 6-point increase from the previous quarter.
A BSI reading below 100 suggests that pessimists outnumber optimists, while a figure above this benchmark indicates a more positive outlook. Notably, the semiconductor sector reported an impressive index of 139, the highest since the survey's inception, remaining above the benchmark for the fourth consecutive quarter.
The cosmetics sector also saw a significant rise, with its index climbing 20 points to 120. Additionally, the medical and precision equipment sectors recorded gains, with their index rising to 108. Despite this optimistic sentiment, over 60% of companies expressed concerns that their operating profits might fall short of initial targets, primarily due to rising production costs linked to elevated raw material and energy prices.
This positive outlook for the fourth quarter reflects a potential growth trajectory for the South Korean economy, buoyed by strong export performances in key industries.
