S. Korea, India Discuss Stalled Biho Air Defense Deal

South Korea and India recently engaged in discussions about the stalled Biho air defense system during their defense cooperation talks. This meeting highlights the ongoing military collaboration between the two nations.

The Biho Hybrid air defense system, developed by Hanwha Aerospace, was a key topic during the joint commission on defense and logistics held in New Delhi. The project had previously faced delays due to India's emphasis on domestic defense manufacturing.

India had shown interest in acquiring the Biho system, estimated at $2.5 billion, but progress stalled as the Indian government focused on boosting local production capabilities. Recent reports suggest that India is reassessing its need for the Biho system amid a growing demand for counter-drone technologies in its military modernization efforts.

During the talks, officials from both sides evaluated the current state of their defense industry cooperation and discussed future partnership opportunities. They also reviewed the status of major joint projects, including the Biho system and the K9 self-propelled howitzers used by the Indian Army.

The discussions aim to revitalize the bilateral defense partnership roadmap established in 2020 and enhance exchanges at both industrial and academic levels.
