South Korea aims to significantly boost its renewable energy capacity by 2030.
Seoul has announced plans to increase its renewable energy capacity to over 100 gigawatts (GW) by 2030, marking a substantial investment in sustainable energy sources. Currently, the country has approximately 40 GW of renewable energy capacity, according to the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment.
This ambitious expansion is driven by the rapid growth of high-tech industries and the increasing demand for electrification. To support this growth, the government will also enhance power infrastructure and energy storage systems (ESSs) to ensure a reliable supply of renewable energy.
Climate Minister Kim Sung-whan emphasized the importance of utilizing existing power networks through ESSs while new transmission and distribution networks are developed. This approach aims to optimize the use of renewable energy and address the challenges posed by current grid congestion.
As South Korea transitions towards a greener economy, the government’s commitment to renewable energy signifies a proactive step towards sustainability and environmental responsibility.
