Hyundai Motor announces a $500 million investment in Alabama to shift Tucson hybrid production from Korea.
Hyundai Motor has revealed plans to invest approximately $500 million in its Alabama facility, marking a significant transition of Tucson hybrid production from Korea to the United States. This strategic move aims to meet the growing demand for hybrid vehicles in the American market while reducing tariff exposure.
During the announcement made at the 2026 Automotive News Congress in Detroit, Hyundai Motor President and CEO Jose Munoz detailed that the Alabama plant will not only manufacture the Tucson hybrid but will also begin producing the Santa Fe extended-range electric vehicle (EREV). The investment will facilitate the local production of new engines and hybrid components, enhancing the plant's capabilities.
Currently, all Tucson hybrids sold in the U.S. are manufactured in Ulsan, Korea, and exported. By shifting production to Alabama, Hyundai aims to bolster local supply capacity and alleviate tariff burdens on vehicles made in Korea. The Tucson is one of Hyundai's best-selling models in the U.S., with sales rising by 7.3% this year compared to the previous year.
Additionally, the investment aligns with Hyundai's broader strategy to enhance its production footprint in North America, aiming for a significant increase in annual production capacity by 2030. Munoz emphasized the company's commitment to localizing production and developing vehicles tailored to the U.S. market.
