Court Orders North Korea to Pay South Korea 44.6 Billion Won

A Seoul court has ordered North Korea to pay approximately 44.6 billion won (about $32.5 million) to South Korea as compensation for the demolition of the inter-Korean liaison office in 2020. This ruling comes three years after the South Korean government initiated legal proceedings against the North.

The liaison office, established in September 2018 to enhance inter-Korean communication, was destroyed by North Korea on June 16, 2020. The demolition was a response to South Korea's inability to prevent defectors from sending anti-Pyongyang leaflets across the border.

The Seoul Central District Court granted the full amount claimed by South Korea, although it did not elaborate on the reasoning behind its decision. The South Korean unification ministry expressed respect for the ruling and indicated plans to pursue necessary measures, hoping for a resumption of dialogue between the two Koreas.

Despite the court's ruling, collecting the compensation may prove challenging, as previous lawsuits against North Korea have faced similar difficulties. The ministry acknowledged the complexities involved in enforcing the payment, given the lack of mechanisms to compel compliance from Pyongyang.
