On September 22, North Korea successfully test-fired shells for an upgraded 240mm multiple rocket launcher system. This test is part of the country's five-year plan aimed at modernizing its artillery and missile capabilities.
Pak Jong-chon, a senior military official, emphasized the necessity of deploying powerful attack forces along the border with South Korea. He stated that the development of these range-extended rockets would significantly enhance North Korea's firepower readiness against perceived threats.
The upgraded rockets can strike targets up to 100 kilometers away using a trajectory flight mode and 115 kilometers in a combined glide mode. This advancement is seen as a move to bolster North Korea's military capabilities in light of its declaration of hostile relations with South Korea.
In response to the test, South Korea's military confirmed it detected the launches and is currently analyzing the situation while maintaining its defensive posture. The South Korean forces are committed to ensuring a robust defense against any provocations from the North.
