North Korea Remains Silent Over POWs' Transfer to South Korea

North Korea has not issued any public statement regarding the transfer of two captured North Korean soldiers to South Korea, which was disclosed by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. This silence has raised concerns among South Korean officials about the implications of the transfer.

Since Zelenskyy's announcement, South Korea's Unification Ministry noted that there has been no mention of the matter in North Korean media, both domestically and externally. The lack of response is notable, given that North Korea typically addresses significant developments related to its military personnel.

Experts suggest that Pyongyang's silence may stem from the sensitive nature of acknowledging that its soldiers chose to defect to South Korea. Such an admission could undermine the North's narrative of its troops as heroes serving abroad. Senior research fellow Cho Han-bum from the Korea Institute for National Unification indicated that the North is likely to avoid publicizing this case domestically.

Under South Korean law, authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the soldiers' capture and determine the necessary protection and resettlement processes. The Unification Ministry has stated that it will monitor the situation closely as it develops.
