North Korea Fires Barrage of Short-Range Missiles a Day After Rejecting Trump Overture

North Korea launched a barrage of approximately 10 short-range ballistic missiles toward the sea on Thursday, South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said, in a show of force that came just a day after Pyongyang dismissed a diplomatic gesture from Washington.

Japan's Ministry of Defense separately confirmed detecting suspected missile activity from North Korea, though it said no debris fell within Japanese territory or its exclusive economic zone. Neither Seoul nor Tokyo reported any immediate damage from the launches.

The salvo followed reports that the Trump administration had decided to scale back the scope of upcoming joint military exercises with South Korea, a move widely interpreted as an overture aimed at drawing North Korea back to the negotiating table. North Korean state media had responded coolly to the gesture a day earlier, effectively shrugging off the reduced drills as insufficient.

Analysts tracking North Korea's weapons programs said the timing of the launches signals that leader Kim Jong Un is unlikely to be swayed by symbolic concessions alone. Many believe Kim's long-term objective is to secure international recognition as a nuclear-armed state and negotiate sanctions relief while offering only limited, incremental steps toward denuclearization rather than a full rollback of his arsenal.

South Korea's military said it is maintaining a heightened readiness posture and coordinating closely with the United States and Japan to monitor further North Korean activity. Pyongyang has significantly expanded its missile testing tempo in recent years, using such launches both to refine its short-range strike capabilities against South Korea and to project defiance amid stalled diplomacy.

The latest launches underscore the difficulty facing the Trump administration as it seeks to revive engagement with Pyongyang, which has shown little appetite for returning to talks without concrete guarantees on sanctions and recognition of its nuclear status.
