On September 21, 2026, a suspected land mine exploded in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) during a military operation aimed at clearing a route for an upcoming United Nations inspection. The explosion occurred south of the Military Demarcation Line (MDL), injuring three South Korean military officers, one of whom suffered a severe ankle injury.
The Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) reported that the incident took place while troops were using mine detectors to identify potential North Korean minefields. Military authorities are investigating the cause of the explosion, considering the possibility that North Korean troops may have planted the mines.
The JCS spokesperson, Jang Do-young, stated that an on-site inspection will be conducted to determine the exact location and cause of the explosion, once safety can be ensured. This incident has heightened concerns regarding the security of the border, especially as North Korea has been reinforcing its defenses along the DMZ since early 2024.
In response to the incident, U.S. Forces Korea Commander Xavier Brunson expressed his sympathies to the injured soldiers and their families, emphasizing the importance of the ROK-U.S. alliance in maintaining security in the region.
