Korean Air announced on Aug. 14 that it has begun operating a maintenance defect analysis system powered by generative artificial intelligence and cloud technology, marking a fresh step in the carrier's push to digitize its aircraft maintenance operations.
The system was jointly developed with IT services firm LG CNS and cloud provider Amazon Web Services over roughly six months. It is designed to let mechanics on the maintenance floor search and analyze technical data far more quickly than before.
Rather than digging through folders of records, mechanics can now type a defect symptom or situation in everyday language, and the AI interprets the context to surface relevant maintenance history and comparable past cases. The system also converts shorthand notes and unstructured field entries written by technicians into standardized, readable sentences, automatically pulling out key details such as corrective actions taken and the location of a defect.
Behind the scenes, the platform consolidates more than 90 previously scattered database tables and millions of maintenance records into a single searchable repository. From there, it generates statistics and trend analyses — including defect life cycles broken down by aircraft model and individual tail number, recurring fault patterns, and histories of parts repairs and corrective actions — while using generative AI to identify correlations across the data. Real-time flight messages exchanged between aircraft and ground crews can also be reviewed alongside the maintenance information.
Korean Air said it expects the tool to reduce the time mechanics spend analyzing technical information and making maintenance decisions, while also improving the overall accuracy of engineering work.
"We have consolidated vast maintenance data that had been scattered and used AI to make it easier and faster to use on the maintenance floor," a Korean Air official said, adding that the carrier plans to keep advancing its maintenance capabilities through AI and data technology.
The launch adds to a wave of AI adoption across South Korea's aviation and logistics sectors, as carriers look to cloud-based tools to cut costs and improve safety oversight amid rising fleet complexity.
