Korea Zinc Co., the largest refined zinc smelter globally, announced that its $7.4 billion manufacturing project in the U.S. has successfully cleared an environmental impact assessment.
This milestone is crucial for the company's expansion plans in the U.S. market, particularly for the construction of a critical metals refinery in Clarksville, Tennessee, known as 'Project Crucible.' The facility is set to begin test operations in 2029, with commercial production of various minerals and sulfuric acid expected to follow in 2030.
The project has been designated as the first 'FAST-41' project approved by the Federal Permitting Improvement Steering Council, which aims to streamline the permitting process for critical infrastructure projects. Tennessee Governor Bill Lee emphasized the importance of this designation in expediting the development of essential infrastructure.
In April, Korea Zinc completed the acquisition of a local zinc smelter and related companies, planning to expand and renovate existing facilities to support this ambitious project.
