KB Financial Sets Up 100 Billion Won 'AX Digital Asset Fund'

KB Financial Group has launched a 100 billion won strategic investment fund to back domestic technology firms tied to digital assets, stablecoins and artificial intelligence.
KB Financial Group said on July 16 that it has established the 'KB AX Digital Asset Fund,' a vehicle worth about 100 billion won ($72 million) that will concentrate on domestic technology companies working in digital assets, including stablecoin-related businesses.
The group described the fund as a strategic investment vehicle rather than a purely financial bet. Its aim is to reinforce the group's expansion into new-technology fields and to secure future growth engines, according to KB. The company plans to invest in Korean firms whose work aligns closely with the group's own digital asset initiatives, such as stablecoins and central bank digital currency (CBDC).
Beyond providing capital, KB said it intends to run joint proof-of-concept (PoC) projects with the companies it backs, testing technologies alongside them rather than acting only as a passive investor. The approach is meant to knit portfolio firms into a wider digital finance ecosystem built around the group.
Major KB affiliates β including KB Kookmin Bank, KB Securities, KB Insurance, KB Kookmin Card and KB Life Insurance β are taking part as limited partners, while KB Investment will serve as the fund's general partner and manage its operations.
KB said it wants to identify the core players of Korea's early-stage digital asset market ahead of rivals and build a digital asset ecosystem centered on the group. It also plans to invest in promising firms developing AI models and applications, as well as data inference and analysis tools, to support the group's broader push into artificial intelligence transformation, or 'AX.'
"This is a strategic investment aimed at discovering companies aligned with the group's future strategy in digital assets and AI, and connecting them to new growth opportunities," an official at KB Financial Group said. The official added that collaboration with portfolio companies would strengthen the group's innovation capacity and expand its digital finance ecosystem.
The launch underscores how South Korea's largest financial groups are moving to stake early positions in digital assets and AI as regulators weigh frameworks for stablecoins and central bank digital currencies.
